Methodology

How we calculate the score

The DogDietLab health score measures your dog's nutritional and health status on a 0–100 scale. The number is not an opinion — it's a rule-based metric computed by an algorithm from the data you provide in your dog's profile. The score is only as reliable as the data entered and is not a clinical diagnostic tool.

What does the score measure?

The score is composed of four main factors. Each factor is weighted in the final number:

35%

Body weight & condition

Current weight compared to ideal weight. Both overweight and underweight result in point deductions.

25%

Digestive health

Stool quality, frequency, vomiting episodes, nature of digestive sensitivity.

20%

Skin, coat & joint status

Presence or absence of itching, skin issues, coat quality, joint problems.

20%

Appetite & energy

Appetite quality, activity level, water intake — indicators of daily vitality.

What does the number mean?

80–100

Excellent

Your dog's nutrition and health are optimal. A maintenance strategy is recommended.

65–79

Good

Generally healthy, but room for fine-tuning. Minor adjustments suggested.

45–64

Needs work

Multiple areas need improvement. A concrete action plan is recommended.

0–44

Needs attention

Immediate steps recommended. A veterinary consultation is strongly advised.

What sources do we rely on?

Our recommendations are not random. We build on the following international guidelines and scientific sources:

  • WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) nutrition guidelines
  • FEDIAF (European Pet Food Industry Federation) recommendations
  • AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) nutrition guidelines
  • AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) nutrient standards
  • Published canine nutrition research and literature

Important to know

•The score is INFORMATIVE — it does not replace a veterinary examination.

•The score is only as good as the data you provide. Accurate profile = more accurate assessment.

•AI recommendations are guideline-based, but not individual diagnostic tools.

•Product recommendations are based on your dog's profile. Some links may be affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.

•We never sell your data to third parties.

Scientific governance

Scientific foundation

DogDietLab is a decision-support system, not a diagnostic tool. Its methods are documented publicly and its outputs are subject to professional and data-led review.

Nutrition standards

Energy and nutrient assessments are aligned with AAFCO and FEDIAF references, with region- and life-stage-specific adjustments.

Validation pathway

A retrospective outcomes study is in preparation. Planned eligibility requires at least eight weeks of follow-up and adequate diary completeness.

Limitations

Owner-recorded data may contain inaccuracies and associations do not establish causation. Urgent and complex cases require veterinary care.

Independent review

External review of the protocol, analysis plan and final results is required before publication.
