Dietary guide

What to feed a dog with diarrhea

Diarrhea is one of the most common reasons owners call the veterinarian. Many cases resolve quickly, but the wrong dietary choices can prolong them, and certain warning signs warrant urgent veterinary attention.

Quick answer

For mild, short-term cases, many owners temporarily switch to a bland, easily digestible diet (plain boiled chicken or turkey with rice or pumpkin, in small frequent meals) with constant access to fresh water. If symptoms don't improve within 24 to 48 hours, or any warning sign appears (blood in stool, vomiting, lethargy, puppy or senior dog), see your veterinarian right away.

What causes diarrhea in dogs?

The most common causes: sudden dietary changes, eating spoiled food or garbage, stress (travel, boarding, new household), infection (bacterial, viral, or parasitic), and food allergy or intolerance.

General dietary approach for mild cases

  • Simple, easily digestible composition (a single boiled protein + simple carb, unsalted, no seasoning)
  • Small, frequent meals throughout the day
  • Constant access to fresh water, since diarrhea causes fluid loss
  • A dog-specific probiotic can be considered for gut microbiome support
  • Discuss exact composition and duration with your veterinarian, particularly if symptoms don't resolve quickly

When to see your veterinarian immediately

  • Blood in the stool: go right away
  • No improvement after 48 hours
  • Diarrhea combined with vomiting
  • Lethargy, refusal to drink, or visible weakness
  • Puppies and senior dogs: go in sooner rather than later
