Quick answer

  • •Portion to your dog's ideal weight, not the current weight
  • •Start from the bag's chart, then adjust for activity and neuter status
  • •Keep treats under ~10% of daily calories and subtract them from meals

Generic "feed 2 cups a day" advice ignores your dog's breed, age, activity, and ideal weight, here's how to get the portion right.

Informational content. This guide provides general dietary guidance and does not replace veterinary examination or diagnosis. For symptoms, suspected illness, or chronic conditions, always consult your veterinarian. Product recommendations may include affiliate links.

Feeding charts on the bag are based on broad weight brackets and assume an average activity level. Two dogs of the same weight can need 20–30% different calorie amounts depending on whether they're neutered, how active they are, and their metabolism. The chart is a reasonable starting point, not a precise prescription.

Action checklist

  • ✔Ideal body weight identified
  • ✔Daily calories calculated and converted to grams/cups
  • ✔Treats counted into the daily allowance
