Quick answer
- •Transition gradually over 7–10 days (14 for sensitive dogs)
- •Mix increasing amounts of new food into the old
- •Pause or revert a step if stools stay loose; call the vet past 48 hours
Changing food too fast is the #1 cause of avoidable diarrhea, a gradual 7–10 day transition prevents most upset stomachs.

Your dog's gut microbiome adapts to a specific diet. An abrupt change doesn't give the gut bacteria time to adjust, which commonly triggers loose stool, gas, or vomiting, even when the new food is higher quality.
