Feeding Mixed Breed Dogs: How to Set Their Diet Without Breed Specifics

A significant portion of dogs are mixed breeds, and this is actually advantageous from a nutritional perspective: mixed breeds generally live with fewer hereditary diseases (hybrid vigor). However, there is no ready-made "breed chart"; the diet must be adjusted based on size, age, activity, and observation. This is the method.

Step 1: Think in Size Categories

For mixed breeds, the breed's place is taken by the expected/current adult size:

CategoryAdult WeightPuppy FoodSenior Age
Toy / Mini< 11 lbstoy/small puppy10–11 years
Small11–22 lbssmall puppy9–10 years
Medium22–55 lbsmedium puppy8–9 years
Large55–99 lbslarge puppy6–7 years
Giant100+ lbsgiant/large puppy5–6 years

For a mixed breed puppy, to estimate the adult size, consider the parents' sizes, the ratio of their paws, and the veterinarian's estimate. If it could grow over 44 lbs, treat it as a large breed: use large breed puppy food and promote slow growth.

Step 2: Calories Based on Body Condition, Not a Chart

For mixed breeds, the body condition test and BCS scale are your tools:

  • Start from the lower end of the feeding guideline on the food bag
  • Conduct a body condition test and weigh every 3–4 weeks
  • If gaining weight → reduce by 10%; if losing weight (and this is not the goal) → increase by 10%
  • This way, over 2–3 months, your dog’s individual portion will be set, which is more accurate than any breed chart

Step 3: Pay Attention to Built-in "Breed Signals"

The mixed breed inherits tendencies from its ancestors, but you cannot predict which ones. Observation checklist:

  • Gluttonous, gaining weight quickly → treat it like weight-prone breeds: measured portions, light formula
  • Itching, recurring ear infections → suspect allergies
  • Deep-chested, large-bodied → prevent bloat: multiple small meals, slow feeding
  • Short-nosed (bulldog/pug type) → shallow bowl, slow eating, rest after meals
  • Long-backed, short-legged (dachshund type) → strict weight control to protect the spine

Step 4: DNA Test, Useful but Not Mandatory

Breed identification DNA tests are now available and can provide insights into hereditary tendencies. However, the key is to act based on observed symptoms, regardless of what is on paper.

Puppy, Adult, Senior Mixed Breeds

  • Puppy: puppy food according to the estimated adult size category; in doubtful cases, the larger category is safer (slower growth)
  • Adult: complete maintenance food + the calorie fine-tuning mentioned above
  • Senior: according to the size category's senior age; signs include decreased activity, stiffness, graying muzzle

Frequently Asked Questions

What food should I give my mixed breed dog? A complete food suitable for its size category and age (AAFCO/FEDIAF compliant). Instead of "breed-specific" foods, size + life stage + individual sensitivities matter.

How do I know how much my mixed breed should eat? The food bag's chart is just a starting point. A fine-tuned portion based on monthly body condition tests and weigh-ins is the precise answer; this varies for each dog.

Are mixed breed dogs healthier? On average, they have fewer hereditary diseases (hybrid vigor), but they are not immune: obesity, allergies, and joint problems can affect them too, with lifestyle playing a larger role than genetics.

What puppy food should I buy for a mixed breed puppy? According to the estimated adult size. If uncertain and it could be 44+ lbs, choose a large breed puppy formula: slower growth is never harmful, while too fast is.

Is it worth doing a DNA test for diet purposes? It provides useful additional information (breed tendencies), but it is not a prerequisite: condition-based portioning and symptom-based fine-tuning can provide an accurate diet without it.
