Rib Test & BCS: How to Check Your Dog's Body Condition at Home
Many dog owners don't realize their dog is overweight.
The Rib Test
Place both palms on your dog's chest. If you can feel their ribs (but not see them), that's ideal.
Body Condition Score (BCS)
Veterinarians use a 1-9 point scale to assess body condition. An ideal score is 4-5 points.
- 1–3: Underweight
- 4–5: Ideal
- 6–7: Slightly Overweight
- 8–9: Obese
Why It's Important
Being overweight shortens life expectancy and can lead to joint problems, diabetes, and heart disease.
