Stress Eating or Loss of Appetite Due to Stress

6 Common Stressors

  1. New environment (moving, vacation)
  2. New household member (baby, new dog, partner)
  3. Change of owner
  4. Loneliness (separation anxiety)
  5. Medical experience (vaccination, surgery)
  6. Loud noises (fireworks, storm)

Stress Eating (More Than Normal)

⚠️ Less common, mainly Labradors, Goldens, Beagles.

Symptoms: food disappears quickly, begging at the table, scavenging, weight gain in 2-4 weeks.

Solution: maintain normal portions, use a puzzle feeder, increase exercise, eliminate the stressor.

Loss of Appetite Due to Stress (More Common)

✅ Much more common — 60-70% of dogs eat less when stressed.

Symptoms: half of food left, eats slowly, refuses to eat in new places.

What to Do?

1. Give them time — 1-2 weeks for adaptation is normal. Appetite usually returns around day 3. It should return after 2 weeks.

2. Maintain routine — fixed feeding times, same food, same bowl.

3. Quiet place — away from new household members, their own resting spot.

4. DO NOT offer special treats — they will become picky later. Be patient!

When to Be Concerned?

🚨 See a vet if they don't eat for 2-3 days, don't drink, have vomiting/diarrhea, are lethargic, or lose weight.

Special Situations

New dog: feed separately (in a different room!), no competition, feed the older dog first.

Baby: feed your dog during baby's feeding time (positive association).

Moving/vacation: bring their own bowl, food, and blanket. Feed at their usual time.

After vaccination/surgery: 1-2 days is normal. Gentle diet (rice + chicken). See a vet after 3 days.

Fireworks/storm: DO NOT feed during stress. Wait 1-2 hours.

Long-Term Stress

Several weeks → dietary problems can develop. Reorganize lifestyle, possibly consult a behaviorist.

Probiotics During Stress

Dog-specific probiotics (Lactobacillus, Enterococcus) for 4-6 weeks. Administer before/during travel, kennel stays, or moving.

Appetite-Stimulating Tricks

If appetite doesn't return after 1 week:

  • Warm food
  • Mix in wet food
  • Bone broth (unsalted)
  • A little tuna water on top

BUT DO NOT get them used to cheese/sausage treats — it will make them picky later.
