Picky Eater Dog

Often not a medical problem, but a learned behavior.

First: Rule Out Medical Causes!

If your dog suddenly becomes picky:

  • Toothache, tartar, gum disease
  • Gastritis, IBD
  • Pancreatitis
  • Kidney disease
  • Cognitive dysfunction in older dogs

5 Factors Contributing to Picky Eating

  1. Owner's Reaction — special attention when food is skipped
  2. Too Many Treats — no hunger
  3. Free-Feeding — no routine
  4. Too Much Variety — "waiting for something better"
  5. Stress — new environment, new family member

"Tough Love" Protocol (for Healthy Adults)

⚠️ DO NOT use for: puppies, senior dogs, sick, pregnant, or underweight dogs!

1. Fixed feeding times (twice daily at the same time) 2. 15-20 minutes to eat — then pick up the bowl, nothing for 12 hours 3. No extras (cheese, hand-feeding, coaxing) 4. Fewer treats (max 5% of daily calories temporarily) 5. Exercise — a tired dog is a hungry dog

How Long Does It Take?

A healthy adult dog can go 48-72 hours without eating. Most will start eating by the end of day 2.

Skipping 1-2 days is NORMAL and not harmful.

See a Vet If:

  • Hasn't eaten for 3-4 days straight
  • Is lethargic, not drinking
  • Vomiting, diarrhea
  • Visible weight loss

Picky Senior Dog

"Tough love" is NOT recommended. Instead:

  • Highly palatable food (warm, steaming)
  • Softer texture (wet food)
  • Small portions
  • Dental check-up
  • Appetite stimulant (Mirtazapine)

Picky Due to Stress

  • New environment: 1-2 weeks for adaptation
  • New family member: positive association
  • Quiet feeding spot

DON'T Do This

⚠️ Adding cheese bits to kibble → reinforces learned pickiness ⚠️ Hand-feeding ⚠️ Changing food daily ⚠️ Table scraps

Tricks That WORK

✅ True hunger ✅ Quiet feeding spot ✅ Puzzle feeder ✅ Eating with company ✅ Clean bowl, fresh food ✅ 70/30 kibble/wet food mix

During Food Transition

7-10 day gradual transition. Don't switch back to the old food "because they don't like it" — they'll never try the new one.

When Is It NOT Pickiness?

  • Eating 80% of their portion
  • Eating less during summer heat (normal)
  • Annual seasonal changes
  • Eating less after an intense workout day
