Puppy Weaning from Mother's Milk

When Does Weaning Start?

Natural weaning begins around the end of the 3rd week and is completed by 7-8 weeks.

Weeks 3-4: First Taste

Teeth emerge, interest grows.

Offer: puppy food soaked to a paste with warm water or puppy milk replacer. Use a shallow dish. Twice daily.

What NOT to offer: cow's milk (lactose!), egg-cheese, broth, adult dog food.

Weeks 4-5: The Paste Phase

  • Soaked puppy food (4 times daily)
  • 1 part food + 3 parts warm water
  • Temperature ~100°F (approx. 38°C)
  • Mother dog still nursing

Health signs: 5-10% daily weight gain, formed soft stool, playful.

Weeks 5-6: Thickening the Consistency

  • 1 part food + 1.5 parts water
  • Separate dish for each puppy
  • Quiet feeding area

Weeks 6-7: Semi-Solid Food

  • 1 part food + 0.5 parts water
  • 4 times daily
  • Nursing time decreases

Weeks 7-8: Full Weaning

  • Dry puppy food
  • 4 times daily
  • Rehoming no earlier than the end of the 8th week

5 Common Weaning Mistakes

  1. Weaning too early — digestive system is not ready
  2. Cow's milk — lactose causes severe diarrhea! Only use canine milk replacer (e.g., Royal Canin Babydog Milk)
  3. Adult dog food — insufficient calories and calcium
  4. Transitioning to dry food too quickly — allow at least 2 weeks for transition
  5. One bowl for multiple puppies — leads to competition and stress

Probiotics

Canine-specific (e.g., Fortiflora Puppy) from week 4.

When to Call the Vet?

🚨 Persistent diarrhea (24+ hours), repeated vomiting, not eating for 12+ hours, lethargy, weight loss, puppy falling behind littermates.

Special Situations

  • Orphaned puppies: Every 2 hours during the first week, every 4 hours from the 2nd week. Vet visit is mandatory.
  • Large breeds: Slower weaning (up to 9 weeks), large breed puppy food (different Ca-P ratio).
  • Miniature breeds: Risk of hypoglycemia, 4-5 small meals daily.

For New Owners (After 8 Weeks)

  1. Ask the breeder what food the puppy was eating.
  2. Feed the same food for the first 1-2 weeks.
  3. Transition gradually.
  4. Establish fixed feeding times.
