What You Can Learn from Your Dog Food Label
The ingredient list is one of the most important pieces of information.
Ingredient Order Matters
Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight.
What to look for:
- Identifiable animal protein should be the first ingredient
- Grains aren't necessarily bad, but shouldn't be the first ingredient
- Natural preservatives (tocopherols, rosemary extract) are better
Ingredients to Avoid
- Sugar, glucose syrup
- Artificial colors
- Vague descriptions
Quality Levels
| Level | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Premium | Identifiable protein as the first ingredient |
| Standard | Mixed protein sources |
| Economy | High filler content |
