Feeding Your Dog in Summer Heat
Sustained heat above 77°F (25°C) can lead to decreased appetite, dehydration, and even heatstroke.
What Changes in Summer?
- Appetite decreases (don't force it)
- Water requirement increases by 30-50%
- Activity decreases → calorie needs also decrease
- Brachycephalic breeds (Pugs, French Bulldogs) are at higher risk
Water Intake
A 44 lb (20 kg) dog might drink 1.5-2 liters (about 6-8 cups) daily in summer.
- Multiple water bowls
- Daily water changes
- Pet fountain
- Ice cubes in the bowl
- Hydrating summer treats
Cooling Summer Treats
✅ Frozen watermelon (seedless) ✅ Frozen banana slices ✅ Frozen cucumber slices ✅ Bone broth ice cubes (unsalted) ✅ Plain yogurt popsicles in silicone molds
Feeding Schedule
On hot days:
- Early morning (6-7 AM) — larger portion
- Late evening (9-10 PM) — smaller portion
- Avoid heavy meals during daytime hours
What if Your Dog Won't Eat?
1-2 days of mild appetite loss is normal. BUT:
- 24+ hours of complete appetite loss → vet visit
- Signs of heatstroke → IMMEDIATELY
- Vomiting + diarrhea + heat → dehydration
Heatstroke Symptoms & What to Do
Heavy panting, body temperature over 104°F (40°C), unsteady gait, bright red or pale gums.
- Move to shade, a cool place
- Spray lukewarm (NOT icy!) water on belly, legs
- Offer water, but don't force it
- IMMEDIATELY to the vet — life-threatening!
Brachycephalic Breeds
- AVOID walks between 11 AM - 5 PM
- Shady walking paths
- Morning/evening walks
- Air-conditioned resting place
Portion Reduction
Less movement → -10-15% calories, otherwise they'll gain weight.
Wet Food Ratio in Summer
- Higher water content (75-85%)
- Cooling effect (cold)
- Appetite-stimulating aroma
Water for Walks
Always bring water and a portable bowl. Don't let them drink from lakes or streams (parasites).
