Can Dogs Eat Yogurt?

Yes, some dogs can tolerate small amounts of plain yogurt that does not contain added sugars or sweeteners. Yogurt is not necessary for a complete diet and may not be suitable for all dogs: lactose can cause bloating, stomach pain, or diarrhea.

Always check the ingredients. Yogurt containing xylitol is dangerous for dogs. If your dog has consumed it, contact your veterinarian immediately, even if there are no symptoms yet.

Can Dogs Eat Greek Yogurt?

Yes, if it is plain, without added sugars, flavorings, or sweeteners, and your dog tolerates dairy products. Greek yogurt typically contains less lactose than regular yogurt, but it is not necessarily lactose-free.

Pay attention to the fat content as well. Full-fat Greek yogurt provides more calories than the low-fat version. If your dog is overweight, on a prescribed diet, or has a history of pancreatitis, consult your veterinarian first.

What Type of Yogurt Can You Give Your Dog?

TypeWhat to Watch For?

Plain Greek yogurtCheck for lactose, fat, and calories
Lactose-free plain yogurtMay be full-fat or contain additives; not suitable for milk protein allergies
Fruit-flavored or sweetened yogurtBetter to avoid due to sugar and potentially unsuitable ingredients
Light or sugar-free yogurtThe front of the packaging is not a guarantee; read the ingredients

Xylitol may also appear on the label as E967. Not all light products contain xylitol, but checking is still necessary. If in doubt, choose another treat.

How Much Yogurt Can a Dog Eat?

There is no universal safe daily amount for all dogs. Factors include body size, calorie needs, the type of yogurt chosen, and individual sensitivity.

If your healthy adult dog can have dairy, start with a tiny taste, not a full spoonful. At the same time, do not introduce any other new treats. Monitor for signs of bloating, stomach pain, vomiting, or soft stools. If any issues arise, discontinue yogurt; for persistent or severe symptoms, consult your veterinarian.

All extras combined should make up no more than about 10% of the daily calories; at least 90% should come from a complete diet. This is the upper limit for treats, not a recommended yogurt amount. Even a much smaller quantity can cause digestive issues in a sensitive dog.

Is Yogurt Good for a Dog's Digestion?

Yogurt may contain live bacterial cultures, but it is not a proven treatment for your dog's diarrhea or other gastrointestinal issues. The strains and amounts of bacteria vary by product. Your veterinarian can determine if a targeted probiotic is warranted.

Do not use yogurt to treat diarrhea: lactose can worsen symptoms. Alongside a complete diet, your dog does not need yogurt as a source of calcium.

When Should You Avoid Giving Yogurt?

  • If there is known lactose intolerance or milk protein allergy.
  • In cases of diarrhea, vomiting, or unclear abdominal issues.
  • During an elimination diet, unless permitted by your veterinarian.
  • Without consulting your veterinarian for prescribed therapeutic diets or past pancreatitis.

You can use a portion of your dog's regular dry food as a reward instead. If you introduce another ingredient, assess its suitability based on your dog's condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my dog eat yogurt every day? There is no need for it. If well tolerated, a small amount occasionally may be fine, but you must also account for other treats and daily calories.

Is Greek yogurt always better than regular yogurt? No. Less lactose can be beneficial, but ingredients, fat content, and individual tolerance are equally important.

Is lactose-free automatically safe? No. It can still contain milk protein and additives. Check the label, and do not give dairy products if there is a milk protein allergy.
