Staffordshire Terrier and Amstaff Diet: Muscle, Skin, Allergies
The American Staffordshire Terrier (Amstaff) and Staffordshire Bull Terrier are muscular, energetic breeds with extremely strong jaws. From a dietary perspective, three areas are important: supporting muscle mass, skin and allergy issues, and weight control, because despite their stocky build, excess weight can creep on unnoticed.
Typical Characteristics
- Weight: Staffordshire Bull Terrier 11–17 kg, Amstaff 25–32 kg
- Life expectancy: 12–14 years
- Predisposition: food allergies, atopic dermatitis (demodex is also more common), joint problems, rarely heart disease
1. Protein: The Foundation of Muscle Mass
This breed is genetically muscular, and this muscle needs to be nourished:
- Protein: 28–32% on a dry matter basis, from identifiable animal sources
- Fat: 14–18% depending on activity
- High protein does not strain the kidneys in a healthy dog; this is an old, disproven myth
Important: exercise builds muscle, not extra portions. The "more food = bigger dog" logic leads to obesity and joint strain.
2. Skin and Allergies: The Most Common Complaint
Amstaffs and Staffies are among the most frequently allergic dog groups. Typical signs:
- Paw licking, redness between paw pads
- Recurrent ear infections
- Red, itchy abdominal skin
- Scratching after meals
Dietary response:
- Limited ingredient diet
- Novel protein: duck, fish, rabbit, venison
- Strong omega-3 support: 75–100 mg EPA+DHA / kg / day
- If suspected, an 8–12 week elimination diet
Chicken and beef are the two most common triggers; for many individuals, even a chicken-free diet brings significant improvement.
3. Weight Control: The Stocky Build is Deceptive
Daily calorie needs for a 28 kg Amstaff:
- Inactive: ~1050 kcal
- Moderately active: ~1300 kcal
- Sporting (agility, weight pulling): 1700+ kcal
Condition is checked by touch: ribs should be easily palpable under a thin layer of fat, and there should be a waistline when viewed from above. In this breed, a "dense" appearance often already hides 2–3 kilograms of excess weight.
4. Jaws and Chewing
Due to their strong jaws, the issue of chew toys and bones is serious:
- Never cooked bones: they splinter
- With hard, natural chews, tooth fracture is a real risk
- Large, strong rubber chew toys designed for powerful chewers are the safest
- Count calories from chews within the daily 10% treat allowance
Puppyhood
- Staffy: medium breed puppy food, Amstaff: large breed puppy food
- Do not rush growth, and do not give calcium with puppy food
- 3–4 meals per day until 6 months of age
Senior (9+ years)
- Senior formula, high protein, reduced calories
- Glucosamine-chondroitin, omega-3
- Annual heart and skin check-ups
