English Bulldog Diet: Brachycephalic Feeding, Skin Folds, Weight

The English Bulldog is one of the most distinctive, yet dietarily sensitive breeds. Due to its short muzzle, skin folds, and tendency to gain weight, the method of feeding is at least as important as the composition of the food.

Typical Characteristics

  • Weight: 18–25 kg
  • Life expectancy: 8–10 years
  • Predisposition: brachycephalic airway syndrome, food allergies, skin fold dermatitis, obesity, joint and spinal problems, bloating

1. Feeding Method: Brachycephalic Basic Rules

Due to its short muzzle, the bulldog swallows a lot of air while eating, which causes gas and uncomfortable bloating.

  • Use a flat, wide, or brachycephalic bowl, not a deep one
  • Slow feeder, if it eats greedily
  • 2–3 smaller portions daily, never one large one
  • 30–60 minutes of rest after feeding, not immediately before or after a walk or play
  • Increasing the proportion of wet food makes swallowing easier

A raised bowl is not an automatic solution here: newer research suggests it may increase the risk of bloat in deep-chested dogs. If you are unsure, ask your vet and check out the bowl selection guide.

2. Weight Control: Breathing Depends on It

Every extra pound directly worsens breathing and joints. The daily calorie requirement for a 22 kg English Bulldog:

  • Inactive: ~850 kcal
  • Moderately active: ~1000 kcal

The breed does not exercise much and is sensitive to heat, so calories must be controlled from the diet side:

  • Portion with a scale, not by eye
  • Maximum 10% of calories from treats, vegetables (carrots, cucumbers) are a good choice
  • In summer heat, movement decreases, so the portion should also be reduced

3. Allergies and Skin Folds

The bulldog's skin folds create a warm, humid microclimate, which predisposes to inflammation. The diet contributes to this as follows:

  • Omega-3: 75–100 mg EPA+DHA / kg / day
  • Limited ingredient or novel protein food if itching is recurrent
  • Chicken-free and beef-free trial: both are common triggers in this breed
  • Zinc and biotin to support the skin barrier

Regardless, the folds must be kept clean and dry daily; diet does not replace this.

4. Bloating and Gas

If gas is severe:

  • Highly digestible food with moderate fiber content
  • Prebiotic-probiotic
  • Slow feeding
  • Avoid foods containing high proportions of beans and peas

Puppyhood

  • Medium breed puppy food, up to 12 months of age
  • 3–4 portions daily up to 6 months of age
  • Very sensitive to heat: for summer puppies, schedule exercise and feeding for cooler hours

Senior English Bulldog (7+ years)

  • Senior formula, reduced calories, 25%+ protein
  • Glucosamine-chondroitin, omega-3
  • The proportion of wet food can be increased if chewing is more difficult
